Lab Rat of the Year 2013 Runner Up:
After a few months of consistent effort and patience, the good days began to outnumber the bad. The pounds began shedding and the transformation began! Over the past year her changes have been dramatic, losing a total of around 80 pounds! Along with her huge weight loss accomplishment, her strength has gone through the roof! She has pulled 205×3 on trap-bar deadlift, 195×3 on back squat, and throws around the 50’s on DB bench for 3! While her body composition changes and weight pr’s are impressive, her mental toughness has been by far the biggest change.
In her own words, “My thought process started to change, in some ways drastically, the reasons for gaining weight in the first place started to dissipate with this new mindset. I lost a lot of weight but my mindset also transferred to other areas of my life, which was a result I never expected.” She has a lot to be proud of for what she has been able to accomplish this year. She is now not only physically strong and capable, but mentally tough as well! She is only 25 years old and now has a new life ahead of her! Our first runner up is Liz Sodd!
Interview with Liz Sodd:
- So tell us a bit about yourself and why you came to The Lab?
After being in good shape and fit most of my life, I was completely horrified when I realized I gained a hundred pounds in just over a year with some help from medications. I was embarrassed to go to a gym; I had never been so out of shape in my life and found that I now hated any form of exercise. A very enthusiastic friend who had a lot of success at the Lab Gym took me on a tour and I quickly realized the atmosphere of the gym was welcoming and one where I didn’t need to be embarrassed.
- Tell us about the results you have experienced both early on and now?
Early on, I did lose weight, but I had a lot of mental barriers that had led to my weight gain and held me back during my workouts. I had a tendency to leave early from my workouts or just cancel. Luckily Trevor is an incredibly patient and understanding trainer who helped me get past a lot of my anxieties and eventually he was able to push me to become stronger than I ever thought possible and lose around 80 pounds. I was the most impressed that between Trevor and Cameron, my thought process started to change, in some ways drastically, the reasons for gaining weight in the first place started to dissipate with this new mindset. I lost a lot of weight but my mindset also transferred to other areas of my life, which was a result I never expected.
- What pearls of wisdom and encouragement can you share about your success that might help the other Lab Rats and readers (or potential Lab Rats)? Any barriers you had before coming that you got past once you were here?
Take advantage of the nutrition aspect. Cameron has worked tirelessly with me to get me to eat in a way that both helps me lose weight and makes me feel so much better in general. Before I met with Cameron, I was on the no carb left behind diet, Cameron’s persistence got me slowly to change my diet, speeding up my weight loss, and making me feel great in general. He also taught me the importance of having a positive attitude, which was a big barrier to having good workouts.
- What are you most proud of about your experiences at The Lab? Have you don’t things you did not think you could do?
I never thought that I would be doing a squat with 195 pounds on my back and survive to tell about it. I also never thought that I would look foreword to working out, or be able to 6 days a week.
- What is your mental approach to exercise? How do you motivate yourself and get through all the workouts and daily exercise?
Sometimes the thing that motivates me to show up is having someone expecting me to be there and call or text when I don’t show up. Other times I look forward to going and look at the progress I’ve made and that I don’t completely hate catching my reflection in the mirror to get me through the next set of exercises.
- What do you like most about having a trainer from the Lab?
I like that Trevor is flexible and understanding, when I am having a bad day, he figures out a way to get me through it. The encouragement that he gives me each session is impressive. The trainers at the gym seem to care and want you to succeed, and will work to figure out ways to make you have the best results possible.
- What do you love most about The Lab?
The cameras, definitely the cameras. (Lab Rat Note: yes, we like to monitor our work J
- What has adopting a lifestyle of diet and exercise done for you? Both physically and mentally?
Before I went to the Lab Gym, I was sick all of the time, always tired, and very anxious, and I didn’t understand what was wrong. Once I changed my diet I started to feel so much better, I very rarely get sick now, I am able to sleep and am no longer tired all of the time. Exercise reduces my anxiety so much I was able to lower or get off many of my medications and use exercise instead.
- What would you tell others? Either waiting to start or thinking about starting?
Go for it, the trainers will work with you at the level that you are at and the atmosphere is very non judgmental.
